Matthew has worked in medical communities across North Carolina during his 19 years in healthcare. During that time he worked for healthcare providers (the Duke University Health System), health insurers (Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Cigna, and Coventry Health Care), and the healthcare consulting firm that helped design the Carolina ACCESS II Medicaid program and a home & community-based long-term care project (the SAIL [Senior Alternatives for Independent Living] programs). Although his roles have been varied, Matthew's core experiences have focused on healthcare financing, strategic planning, and contract/regulatory compliance.
Matthew also held roles responsible for regulatory compliance in financial and operational settings, including development of internal controls and compliance programs (for CMS, NC Department of Insurance, and Sarbanes-Oxley regulations). His academic medical experience at Duke focused on contracting, clinical service program development, and business/strategic planning.
His undergraduate education (BA – '87) was at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his graduate education (MA – '90) was at the University of Florida.
